Our collaborative paper on thermochromic supramolecular assemblies with Prof. Mark Olson of Tianjin University was featured on the front cover of Chemistry of Materials Issue 23, 2017. The image depicts a Chinese dragon whose body undergoes color change in water as an embodiment of the underlying hydrochromic mechanism which modulates the competition between π-to-π* and n-to-π* CT interactions. The dragon appears as a test image in the paper and was printed using our materials as inks in a commercial inket printer to give a reversibly thermochromic image.

November 28th - December 1st, 2017
Lei, Alex, and Jongbok traveled to Texas A&M at Qatar in Doha to spend a week working with Mohammed Al-Hashimi's group in order to work on current and future collaboration projects.

The group volunteered at the annual Chemistry Open House with a Virtual Reality (VR) activity. Google Cardboard VR headsets were equipped with smartphones displaying common chemicals (water, acetic acid, ascorbic acid, sodium chloride, etc.) in 3D space. While viewing, participants could move their heads to view all sides of the compounds and even drift through the crystal lattices of select molecules. After being immersed in the VR chemistry world, participants were rewarded candy for correctly answering questions about the molecules.
