Chemical catalysis lies at the heart of solutions to unsolved problems in chemical synthesis and energy conversion. Research in the Powers Group combines the tools of modern organic, inorganic, and organometallic chemistry with detailed spectroscopic and computational investigations to develop new catalysts and catalysis strategies to tackle a range of synthetic problems.

Areas of particular interest include:

  • Developing catalysts for shape-selective chemical reactions in order to streamline the synthesis of new functional molecules, such as therapeutics;
  • Controlling multi-electron redox chemistry to develop catalysts based on earth-abundant metals for hydrocarbon valorization; and
  • Discovering small organic molecules that support solar energy storage in the form of chemical potential.
