Student Assessment of Learning Gains - Student Comments on the Class

This was definitely one of the toughest classes I've had to take since I am not science saavy. It was challenging but it taught me to try harder and be more responsible.

I think I have learned more in this class than any other class in college so far. The number one reason is the pace, it allows you to learn it not just memorize for the test.

awesome prof!!!

The chem skill builder was very helpful.

I think it is very hard to learn alot from the Chem Skill Builder. Not because I think it is too much work, but because since it is a computer program, if you add an extra space or don't capatalize the E in scientific notation, etc. you get the question wrong and it is more frustrating than helpful.

Good overall class with plenty of opportunities to get the grade you want in the class.

I had a really goood highschool teacher so I had already seen 95% of what we covered this semester; however, it was taught in a different style to where I found it more interesting and I can relate information better to other subjects.

This class was very useful in enforcing the main concepts of chemistry.

This class is taught by Dr. K in a way that is easy to learn and apply what she teaches...she does a great job with Chem 101.

i've never learned chemistry so well. Dr. Kennicutt is the best professor that TEACHES that I've ever had.

I have noticed a great personal improvement in undertaking course load and in my ability to undertake large amounts of information about chemistry.

i have to take 102 .... i hope i can get Dr. K again...loved her!

I think this was a VERY GOOD class. I think that lab reviews were VERY helpful. I wish that future chemistry classes would have lab reviews.

I think Dr. K is a great professor because she is understanding and caring, yet she still gets the whole teaching part done. Her lenient makeup policy really, really helped me and her lectures were great too. But I hated-very much so-the cpr assignments. They just frustrated and discouraged me. There were several times when I would answer a question that I could clearly support, but it would count it wrong. I'm not in support of it.

CPR was not helpful at all. It was very frustrating. Perhaps, the instructer could take the top two scores instead of three.

I really liked the ease at which I could get in contact with Dr. K. She is very open and friendly and answers lots of questions. She is also very patient with those of us that sometimes mess up!

I loved this class. It made me want to change my major to chemistry.

The class was very helpful.

I love the professor as a mentor. I could not have made it through chemistry without her wonderful teaching skills, and her caring attitude. Dr. Kennicutt really cares for her students. I was very blessed to have her as my professor. She really made my first year of chemistry at TAMU enjoyable!

I really liked the class and the way it was taught. It was a lot of work, but I think that all of the work helped me to learn more.

I was really able to grasp all the concepts behind chemistry in this class.

My favorite thing about Dr. K's class, is that you can tell how much she cares about her students and wants them to suceed in her class.

I really did not think I would enjoy this class as much as I did!

This class was an eye-opener. Luckiy I got a good professor, it could have been worse...so I've heard.

This class was very informative and the teaching was very good. I would recomend this prof. to anybody that needs to take this class.

Great teacher. Awesome class!

Dr. k did an amazing job helping us learn the material, and being there when we needed help. She was also incredibly understanding at all times, which was almost unreal. I have not had a teacher that was involved with the students. I am not saying that i have an amazing grade but that she helped me really understand the material.

This class really made me appreciate chemistry because I was able to actually understand the material we covered.

I thought the class well organized and fair. I had a hard time cause I am a junior and I havent had a chemistry class since 10th grade. I felt as though the class was taught geared towards all of the students who have just gotten out of highschool which is understandable. It just made learning all of the material tough.

I plan on going into the medical field so I believe that many of the topics in this class will apply to me later.

I really enjoyed Chem 101 with Dr. Kennicut, all of the chances to improve your grades and the great availability there was for help was all very helpful. Even though this class did require alot of time and work, I have never learned sooo much about chemistry. I can honestly say that this class has taught to enjoy chemistry and I plan on taking Dr. Kennicut again in the fall for Chem 102!

You are a GREAT teacher! Your ability to effectivly teach eliminates the necessity for activities like CPR and CSB. If a student needs more work then they will seek it out. Things like CSB should be available, but not mandatory for students who understand the concepts without a lot of extra work. Some students can work the problems on the test without doing the busy work.

Dr. KK is awesome.

there is a lot asked of us in the CPR writings. Lets keep the topics simple and focus on the main importance. Too much writing for a small topic takes up too much time and focuses on the writng technique instead of the scientific approach. Abstracts are annoying.

i really think dr. k was a wonderful professor

This class was overall a great class. Dr. K did a fantastic job. Unfortunately, I am not a science person, so this does not seem like it will be relevant to me, but I still worked hard and did well.

I thought this was a great class! I feel like I understand it more now, than I ever had! Thanks!

I think there is too much work involved in this class. It took most of my attention away from my other classes. I work to put myself through college and it seemed like everynight i got off work all I had time for was chemistry. I enjoy the course, but it just came with too much stress.

Class was taught VERY well. I understood more than I EVER thought I would because our professor was very patient and it seemed like she actually cared whether or not we learned the material...not too many professors do in my opinion.

This class was enjoyable and taught me alot about chemistry and also how to write well in chemistry.

Awesome class! I'm definatly signed up with K.K. for fall 102. Dr. K, you rock my socks off!

Great class- good pace- everything well explained with relevant examples

This is the best class ever.

This class helped me understand a lot more about chemistry then my chemistry class in high school. The teaching was a help, but so was the lab. The lab involving making models of molecules almost completely taught me that subject.

I have a problem with CPR and its calabration teqhniques. I think a lot of the question are subjective and open to some interpretation. However, you do allow us to bring concerns to you so there is not too much to complain about. I am frustrated at the limitation that CPR places upon the grader and the student being graded. I feel it did nothing to improve my writing skills, even the ability to write abstractly. I would rather a TA or prof grade the papers with harder standards than leave a potion of the grade up to one's own individual calibration of peers. My major is English, and while that does not qualify me in any way, it does make me a familiar grader and editor of papers. I think the CPR system is limiting to the grader and I think that for some of the questions, there is more than a right or wrong answer.

Dr. Kennicutt was a great professor and made it interesting!

She is a wonderful teacher/person, but I just couldn't pick up on the material how she taught it. I also feel all the writting this class required was a bit excessive. I felt more in an english class than a chemistry class.

I hate CPR

I feel that I really learned a lot that I will be able to carry with me and remember for futer classes.

very helpful in dealing with chemistry

I think Dr. Wendy Keeney-Kennicutt has an awesome teaching method. I took 101 last semester and was completely blown away with the level of difficutly of the prof. Dr.K really helped me understand all that was being taught and all that needed to be learned.

This class helped a great deal in understanding main concepts. Her grading was more than fair and even though it seemed like a lot of extra work, it paid off in the end.

Im in business so i will not carry the actual information with me, but the study habits and the enjoyment of chemistry I will always carry with me.

This class was very useful and i learned a lot. I didn't learn that much from the CPR or CSb though.

This class was amazing. I love the way Dr. K taught the class and how she was always willing to help students.

This course has definitely given me a solid introduction to Chemistry. I feel i have a solid basic understanding to grow on.

This class was great and the only reason im not doing as well as i can is my own fault.

I really enjoyed the class as well as the manner in which it was taught to us.

The subject of chemistry is difficult but this class was very helpful in explaining it and allowing me to learn the material well.

Other than the cpr3 over the simulation of limiting reactant, i didnt feel that they really helped me to understand the materail.

I feel like I can look at about anything, and find a way to figure it out.

I enjoyed this class a great deal. Dr. K, I thought you did an excellent job teaching the material. You made the class enjoyable and the material easy to understand. I took two years of chemistry in high school so i felt like I should have been in your 102 class. There were times this semester when things were really slow becuase I understood the material but i would highly recommend your class to anybody.

I feel Dr. K did a great job teaching a subject as difficult a chemistry. Her office hours and 1 on 1 toturing was great!

I would have to say this has been the best experience for me taking chemistry. I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I really have enjoyed the challenge of Chemistry. It is a challenge because chemistry has never been a strong course for me. I do not know what it exactly was that made me actually enjoy the course as much as I did although I failed to make an A, but the main source was because of the professor, Dr. Kennicutt. I almost feel like I want to pursue the challenge of learning more in depth chemistry.

even though the course work seems very overwhelming at times with the BOP's, and the CSB and the CPR and just plain studying, it really all does end up helping you and your grade if you put the effort into really doing them

I just want to starr off by saying that you are one of the most passionate teachers I know, and it shows that you really care about the students. But after saying that I feel that I must tell you, I think your teaching ability is not not up to par. It seems to me that you have become too comfertable with your own teaching style and have stoped adapting to your students needs. You might try changing it up a bit. First of all, I would change your slides they are so boring, if you had a powerpoint setup with some interesting pictures or short movie clips, so the visual learners can see what you are talking about, and bright colors to keep the class paying attention. I think your passion for the subject combined with a new presintation will greatly improve the quality of the class.

Great class...one of the first ones in college that I actually felt I learned a ton.

I really liked Dr. K and will be hoping to take her for 102. Our lab TA, Yun, also knew her material very well and would help with questions. However, she was a little hard to understand.

If you put in the effort, it will come alot easier.

Good structure for clas, grade, homework wise, etc.

K-k eplained everything very easy so it wasnot too overwhelming to remember

I think Mrs. K was awesome because I have learned a tremendous amount considering I had no chem background previously.

This class was very enjoyable

i thought the course overall was alot better than i thought it was gonna be

I feel I was only learning it because I had to- I am positive that if I really enjoyed the subject of chemistry than I would have been alot more interactive in learning. It was a well taught course and I would take chemistry 102 with kennicutt.

The class was great. I could understand Dr. Kennicutt very well, but the TA's would confuse me in the labs.

This class was taught very well

I'm a comm major and I hate chemistry. I think I would have drowned if I had taken anybody but kennicutt. she makes the workload managable. She truly is one of a kind, and an amazing teacher.

overall the class was good but the extra work like cpr and abstacts were really more of a pain than they were helpful.

Dr K was an awesome professor, she was willing to help anyone at anytime

I really enjoyed comming to class. this was my second time to take it. it was much better for me this time because i felt that when i was at lecture i learned every time, unlike my first time w/ Dr. Mawk. thank you!

Althougth the work load was heavy it really helps students understand the material thoroughly. The solution manual was extremely helpful and the way the class was taught was exceptional.

Hopefully making a good grade in CHEM 101, willl help me in CHEM 222, and other Chemistry related classes

I have to take Chem. 102 so I need to retain everything from this class.

I thought this was a very good class. I'll be back for 102.

I really liked this class a lot, and I know that it ties in a lot with my major and stuff I will need to learn more about as a Food and Nutrition Science major.

This was a great class.. I liked how there were other possible grades to make up for the points missed on the exams.

I think it will help me somewhat

Good class.... good teacher... too much busy work

I really enjoyed the class

Great Professor who knew her material. Patient, lenient, always responded to emails quickly, easy to contact. Great course!!

This was the best college class I have taken thus far. Dr. K is great- she is prepared, organized, and understanding of students.

This class I thought was well taught. It just isn't one of my best subjects. I understand more when it comes to biology.

Chemskillbuilder is frustrating, and it seems like a waste of my time when I could be studying in ways that work better for me--especially when I enter an answer correctly and have a random space, or missing a letter because the program doesn't always keep up w/ typing and it's counted wrong. That, and it tends to freeze up.

Dr. K taught in a way that I finally understoop chemistry, and was not just going through the motions like classes in the past.

I took this class last semester and was lost the WHOLE ENTIRE time. This year I felt like I knew what was going on and could even help others with some of the material. I think the pace Dr.K taught was very appropriate. I hated chemistry before this class and it was actually ended up being my favorite class this semester. I would have taken Dr.K for chem 101 the first time around.A few suggestions:I think that the CSB would have been more helpful if it showed the solutions and explained better like in OWL, but I thought the problems in CSB were better overall. I think the CPR assignments were not very helpful in comprehending the class. It might have been ok but it took to long when I could have been studying for the tests and didnt help my grades or knowledge on the test.

teachers must speak CLEAR and loud ENGLISH

I'll remember the basics and be able to use it in organic chemistry.

The ability to think problems through logically, one step at a time.

I'll admit that I don't exactly like chemistry and there isn't a whole lot anyone could do to change my attitude, but I felt that you had a good attitude towards this subject and that's a good thing for those interested. One thing I believe you might consider altering would be the CSB assignment. I found it very helpful, but it was too time consuming when having to do the entire chapters as a grade. I think it should be left up to the students as to how much they would like to do, but have a smaller amount required as a grade. Thanks and have a great summer.

I really liked CSB.

This class was a great elective--it gave me an overview of chemistry.

Chemistry is a very difficult course. Fortunitly I only have to take it once, but if I had to again, this class really helped. Dr. K was very helpful and so was Elky.

I had no science background so it was hard learning the more difficult concepts but the main ones are useful in classes such as Animal Nutrition and Feeding...another course I'm taking this semester

I thought the class was taught very well and it was easy to understand and learn the material.

students will easily get lost behind due to the vast workload you demand, this class takes a lot of discipline perhaps through doing all this work we are supposed to develop an appreciation for chemistry, but most of the students will become complasant with average grades rather than accepting the challenge to work harder in class, the work you demand can be slightly more difficult if you demand less of it, tedious and numerous questions only spark boredom, the CSB was great but i think the CPR was BS

I do not like Chemistry and this class was torture for me! It only helped me to lose my mind becuase I tried so hard and the course load was very overwhelming.

class had a lot of work and i csb had to many bugs and glitches...if i would have studied for all that time instead of messing with it then i would know everything about chemistry

I do not think i am very chemistry well minded. Therefore I dont ever want to have a profession using chemistry.

very well taught...i look forward to chem 102 next year

i thought the class was well taught overall...
