X-ray Diffraction Laboratory Site Training

This information is intended for users of the X-ray Diffraction Laboratory and is specific for the operation of the instruments located in rooms 1424, 2407 and 2409 (Chemistry)

To use the instrumentation you must

(1) read and understand the information given below

(2) download the x-ray safety check list and certification form and return it to Joseph Reibenspies room 2408.  YOU MUST BE REGISTERED! (See above)

(3) attend Texas A & M University's Radiation Safety Training Course 
     or complete the X-ray Devices: Radiation Safety Training at the TAMU EHSD site 

Bring the Certificate of Completion from the On-line or Classroom courses and the signed SAFETY CHECK LIST FORM  to the X-ray Diffraction Laboratory to complete your training to room 2408.

  1. The location of radiation producing devices in room 1424, 2407 and 2409.  Details.
  2. Emergency electrical shutoff switches for all instruments in room 1424, 2407 and 2409.  Details.
  3. Emergency electrical shutoff switch for each instrument.  Details.
  4. Emergency exits for room 1424, 2407 and 2409.  Details
  5. Emergency procedures in case of fire.  Details
  6. Emergency procedures in case of chemical accidents.  Details.
  7. Emergency procedures in case of X-ray exposure.  Details.
  8. Location of operational safety procedures (OSP) for each instrument.  Details.

In case of radiation exposure

  • Stop any action that would put you at risk to radiation exposure

  • Cut power to the X-ray diffractometer

  • Contact  Joseph Reibenspies (845-9125 or 693-2175) or Ron Carter (845-3335 or 693-4767)

  • Call Radiation Safety Office 862-1111

  • Post warning signs on diffractometer.

Operation of Radiation Surveillance Equipment

 
          Audio "pancake"  Geiger Counter.

1)Detach detector and remove plastic cover to expose window.
2)Turn selection switch to Battery and read status of power.  If low replace batteries
3)Turn selection switch to lowest detection level.
4)Place detector near area to exam meter and listen for clicks.

 
         Non-audio Geiger Counter.    
1)Detach detector and turn detector core to expose window.
2)Turn selection switch to Battery and read status of power.  If low replace batteries
3)Turn selection switch to lowest detection level.
4)Place detector near area to exam and read meter.

 
Audio Geiger Counter.  Small black self-contained device.
1)Depress button on front of device.  A red light will be seen.
2)Place device near area to exam.  Read meter and listen to clicks.
