Reservation Rules

This is an attempt to explain in plain English the reservation rules on the various routine access spectrometers. The rules are coded for machine interpretation, so the actual performance on the reservation system may vary from these descriptions. Also, the rules database may be updated or changed more often than this descriptive page. Caveat Emptor.....

VXR-300

Routine Proton/Carbon spectrometer in 2211E, Organic Majors lab.

The VXR-300 should be available for same-day only reservations between 9 AM and 10 PM Monday through Saturday. Time is available in 10 minute increments and only 30 minutes (3 blocks) may be reserved on a given day. Hours between 9 AM and 2 PM may be reserved after 8 AM in the morning. 2 PM to 7 PM may be signed up after 1PM, and 7 PM to 10 PM may be signed up after 5 PM. The overnight hours, 10 PM to 9 AM, and Sunday may be reserved up to 3 days in advance after 2 PM in the afternoon, and any amount of time may be reserved. For the purposes of calculating the 3 days in advance, consider the following morning as part of the previous evening. After 2 PM on Monday, you can reserve time on Tuesday night (1 day in advance), Wednesday night (2 days in advance), Thursday night (3 days in advance), and Friday morning before 9 AM (considered part of Thursday night.

When classes are meeting (Chem 234 and Chem 433), no time may be reserved during the class periods, and the class members have relaxed reservation rules.

Mercury 300

The Mecury 300 rules are very similar to the VXR300 rules. The two notable differences are:

Sunday is same day only instead of Saturday, so there is alway one system available with same day only reservations.
Overnight and Saturday time may only be reserved 2 days in advance rather than 3.

Inova 300

This system is unique with its rolling same-day only reservation rule. Every 10 minutes, another 10 minute block is open and available for reservation. Overnight and Sunday reservations use the 'normal' overnight rule, permitting reservations up to 3 days in advance after 2 PM.

Inova 400

Broadband 400 MHz system in room 1324. This system is available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, under the 'overnight rules': any amount of time can be reserved up to 3 days in advance, after 2 PM. When demand for instrument time is very high, this system does not work well. At those times, reservations may be scheduled manually by facility staff, generally 2-3 weeks in advance, based on user requests.

Inova 500

Walk-up 500 Mhz system in room 1221. This table summarizes the reservation rules:

This system is available for same-day only service Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM (Monday, Friday) or 10 PM (Tuesday-Thursday). Time is reserved in 15 minute blocks, and same day only reservations are limited to 3 blocks (45 minutes) before 5 PM and 4 blocks (1 hour) after 5 PM. It is available for reservations 3 days in advance overnight and weekends. Overnight time is considered to be from 10 PM to 8:30 AM the following morning. The hours after midnight must be reserved separately, since each day is a separate reservation page, but may in fact be signed up 4 days in advance to permit the blocks to be reserved contiguously.
