Inova 500B

This first picture shows the superconducting magnet, RF preamplifiers, magnet leg assembly, and the AirJet sample cooler. The AirJet cooler includes the black hose running around the back of the magnet. The magnet has rubber donuts on the base to provide vibration damping.

The second picture shows the Ultrashims console with spectrometer console to the right and the AirJet cooler to the left.

The third picture shows the spectrometer console and the host computer on the far right.

The AirJet cooler provides mechanical cooling of the incoming gas stream to as low as-85 degrees C to permit long term sample cooling without user intervention. This permits observation of biological sample at regulated temperatures near or slightly below room temperature for several days.

The Ultrashims accessory provides 39 orthogonal room temperature magnetic shim controls, shimming the Z axis through the eighth order. Typically, the Z axis is only shimmed through the sixth order, however. This unit should provide the homogeneity necessary for doing water suppression experiments in sample tubes larger than the normal 5mm tubes.

The spectrometer console has two complete broadband channels, both capable of operating from 500 MHz down to 10 MHz. Both channels are equipped with awaveform generator, permitting tailored excitation using shaped pulses rather than the normal square pulses and custom decoupler waveforms. The console has linear amplifiers on both channels, permitting control of pulse and decoupler powers over a range of 79 db. This is used in conjunction with the waveform generators as well as a mechanism to provide complete operator control of the power used for the pulsing, decoupling, and spin-locking segments of a pulse sequence.

The console also includes a 30 G/cm Pulsed Field Gradient amplifier that can be used to generate accurate, reproducible Z axis gradients as part of a pulse sequence. These are used for both multiple quantum pathway selection in 2D experiments and artifact elimination in both 1D and 2D experiments. The PFG accessory can also be used to perform Deuterium Gradient shimming on deuterated solvents.

This system is equipped with a 5mm indirect detection probe. The observation channel is fixed on proton and the broadband decoupling channel can be tuned over the range 50-202 MHz (N-15 up to P-31). This probe has a Z axis PFG coil installed.

The host computer is a Sun Ultra Sparc 5 with 128 Meg of memory and a 9 GB disk for system usage. There is also a 1.3G hard disk for user data storage. See the workstation disk detail for a description of how disk space is managed on all the Unix systems. A LaserJet III is used for local printing and plotting.
