GOALS:

The research is focused on attaining a detailed understanding of electronic excited states through which all photochemical processes occur.  Far-infrared and Raman spectroscopy are utilized to determine the potential energy surfaces (PESs) which govern conformational and structural changes in electronic ground states.  Laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy together with ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy is used to determine the vibrational quantum states in electronic excited states which are then used to determine the PESs in these states.  Recent work has focused on bicyclic aromatic molecules, cyclic ketones, and molecules such as stilbene with photoisomerization.
