I am investigating the use of dirhodium(II,II)-based compounds in their abilities to cause cell death in various cancer cell lines, specifically those related to ovarian and cervical cancers. Cell death can occur through various processes such as the production of singlet oxygen, a highly reactive species along with covalent binding and intercalation with DNA. The explicit mechanisms of cell death as well as the sub-cellular localization of the compounds of question will be studied using chelating fluorescent dyes and spectroscopic techniques. Possible future projects include the solid phase synthesis of peptides capable of targeting specific cancer cell lines through the exploitation of protein overexpression on cancerous cellular membranes.
