My research in the Dunbar research group which is collaborative with the Turro research group at the Ohio State University focuses on the design, synthesis and characterization of dinuclear rhodium(II) complexes for applications including as photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents for cancer, photosensitizers for dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and photocatalysts for H2O reduction. Numerous physical and spectroscopic methods are brought to bear on the problems including single crystal X-ray diffraction, electronic absorption (Uv-vis), Infrared and NMR spectroscopies. Electrochemical techniques are also being used as a valuable source of information in conjunction with computational studies (DFT calculations) to provide important insight into the redox and photophysical properties of the complexes in both the ground and excited states.
