NMR Reservations

Instrument time reservations for the routine access spectrometers (VXR-300, Mercury-300, Inova-300, Inova-400, and Inova-500) may be made with a computerized reservation system. The reservation rules on these systems are rather confusing at first - they have evolved over the years as the NMR users' committee tries to accommodate everyone's needs. There is now a summary of the reservation rules available.

Time on the Unity500 and Inova500B spectrometers, as well as the Inova 500 and Inova 600 in Biochemistry, is scheduled a month at a time. - Requests for time on these systems should be made by emailing s-silber@tamu.edu with the details by the 20th of the preceding month.

Beginning in the Spring of 2002, time on the Inova400 has been scheduled in a hybrid manner, due to high demand for instrument time. Time is currently pre-allocated, 4 to 5 weeks at a time, and entered into the reservation system. Users may then remove reservations or reserve available time using the normal open access reservation system and policies.

Reservations on any of the routine access instruments may be made by accessing the reservation system on one of the workstations (nmrsun1, nmrsun2, or nmrsun3). Establish a telnet connection to that machine and login with the username 'reserve'. No password will be required. You may then choose a terminal type and an instrument. Use your INSTRUMENT username and password to make a reservation on one of the systems. For more details, see NMR note #10.

Click Here to open a telnet session to nmrsun2. Login as 'reserve', select vt100 as the terminal type, and choose the system of interest. This will only work for users behind the campus firewall - outside users will not be able to access this system. You can use VPN from off-campus to establish a network connection within the firewall and then be able to telnet to one of the workstations.

Internet Explorer 7 now prohibits use of external programs such as telnet as a security risk. If you have a system with IE7, this link will not work. You have three options available:

  1. From the 'Start' menu, select run command in enter 'telnet nmrsun2' as the command to run. This will open a telnet window to nmrsun2.
  2. Install Netscape, Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, or some other browser that will permit telnet to run from within the browser.
  3. Modify your registry to permit telnet to run. This link to Berkeley describes how to do this: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/Catalogs/ie7_telnet.html . Beware that modifying your registry may cause problems and/or be difficult or impossible to back out. Caveat Emptor!
