Graduate Teaching Assistants (GATs) are an integral part of the teaching mission of the Department of Chemistry. GATs are professional salaried employees. In order to provide an appropriate learning atmosphere for undergraduate students, it is imperative that laboratory courses by properly instructed and that assignments be graded promptly and accurately. The following evaluation procedures are designed to provide GATs with information which can be used to enhance and improve their teaching effectiveness.

Evaluations of the student's teaching ability serves many purposes. It will enhance the TAs performance and will also give the GSO the information needed for Departmental and University Teaching Awards.

1. GATs may be evaluated at mid-term by the faculty lab coordinators.
2. A final evaluation will be completed by students in each section at the end of the semester and the faculty lab coordinators may complete a final evaluation form as well.
3. The final course evaluation scores will be reviewed by the Graduate Student Office (GSO).
4. GATs receiving poor evaluations (less than 3.0 on a 5.0 scale) in two or more semesters may not be re-appointed as GATs
5. Copies of all mid-term and final evaluations by students, as well as supervisor evaluations, will be retained in the student's permanent record in the Graduate Student Office.
