Procedures

Time/Notes

1. Take Graduate Orientation Exams These are taken during the week prior to your first semester of graduate study in Organic, Physical, Analytical, Biological, and inorganic Chemistry. These can be repeated once prior to start of the 2nd semester.

2. Classes

Coursework is usually completed within four semesters. The minimum is 15 credit hours of coursework, in chemistry. Two College of Education courses must be completed. The minimum GPR required is 3.0. The total number of hours must be 36 or more.

3. Teaching

You will be required to teach for two semesters.

4. Choose an Advisor

This is done within the first semester. Additional time, however, can be allocated for this important decision.

5. Submit Degree Plan

This must be prepared by the end of the second long semester. The Degree Plan is a listing of all courses to be taken over the two years of study.

6. Seminars

The Chemistry Department has an outstanding seminar schedule. You will attend divisional seminars, student seminars (Chem:681) and a prestigious seminar series called Frontiers in Chemical Research. After completion of coursework, seminars provide the foundation for life-long learning.

You must enroll for 2 semesters of CHEM 681: Seminar. You must present two seminars.

7. Professional Internship

Students normally perform the required internship in an educational setting during the last two semesters of study. The internship must be a research project that includes scholarly work. Before beginning the internship, a professional internship proposal must be approved by the advisory committee. The proposal must outline the strategies and methods that will be used.

8. Submit Professional Report

Upon completion of the research oriented internship, a professional quality report is presented to the advisory committee.

9. Apply for Degree

See "Office of Graduate Studies Calendar" for specific dates.

10. Final Oral Defense and Seminar
