Degree Plan

*Please note: We recognize that students have specific circumstances that may warrant slight adjustments to the requirements. The GSO will try to accommodate these.

Underlying Philosophy

The advisory committee or research advisor, in consultation with the student, will develop a degree plan which lists the basic academic requirements for a given degree. The degree plan differs according to previous education and experience and the degree being pursued. The degree plan must be filed with the Graduate Student Office in Chemistry by August 31 of your first year of study. It is possible to change the degree plan once it has been submitted. Refer to the section at the end of this page entitled "petitions".

Rules and Regulations

For Ph.D. and M.S. students, the degree plan must be filed with the Office of Graduate Studies before registration for the third long semester. For students starting in a Fall semester, this would mean at the end of their first Summer.

See Subvention Hours Page

For any type of degree plan, the student may have more than the minimum hours of coursework or research hours. The Office of Graduate Studies will only count the number entered on the degree plan. There is some flexibility in the two Ph.D. programs, but the requirements for the M.S. program are set.

Students who have taken graduate level courses prior to attending Texas A&M University but who did not complete a degree may petition to have these courses transferred in for credit. Once a course has been used for another degree, however, it can not be transferred.

*International student requirements vary - check with the Graduate Student Office for specific information.

+If the M.S. is from Texas A&M University, slightly different rules apply - check with the Graduate Student Office for specific information.

#These are Texas A&M University requirements.

Other Information:

Petition Process:
Once a degree plan has been approved by the student's advisory committee, the Graduate Advisor, and the Office of Graduate Studies, the only way any part of it can be changed is by a petition. This includes substituting coursework, changing committee members, etc. The petition form can be obtained from the Office of Graduate Studies Webpage. Each petition must be approved by the student's advisory committee, the Graduate Advisor, and the Office of Graduate Studies.

INSTRUCTIONS ON SUBMITTING PETITIONS

On PETITIONS requesting addition, deletion, or substitution of course, each course entry must show a) the official course prefix; b) course number; c) the number of semester credit hours assigned to the course; and (d) full title of the course (full, exact titles of 489 and 689 courses must be indicated).

The names of every individual listed on the PETITION must be typed beneath the signature. (This includes the student, members of the Advisory Committee, individuals requested as replacements or additions to the committee, department heads, etc.)

One original and three copies will be sent to the Office of Graduate Studies after the petition has been signed by the graduate advisor.

Provided space is adequate, please put as many requests as needed on one PETITION.

Return the completed form to the Graduate Student Office in Chemistry for processing.
