Current Activities

My primary responsibility as Associate Undergraduate Advisor is to assist Dr. Holly Gaede, Chief Undergraduate Advisor, in all academic advising for the approximately 250 undergraduate chemistry majors at Texas A&M University. Having all academic advising activities in the Undergraduate Advising Office allows us to maintain a close advising relationship with undergraduate chemistry majors from the time they enter the University and to focus specifically on their strengths, needs, and concerns. We are able to offer more personalized service because, as Ph.D. chemists and active undergraduate teaching faculty, we have experience with many of the same issues with which they are confronted. I have additional experience as a practicing medical technologist at a major hospital and as an environmental scientist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. Dr. Gaede and I can relate to the problems, frustrations, and accomplishments of our majors in a way that "professional staff advisors" are unable to.

Since 1999 I have been the instructor for CHEM 100 - Horizons in Chemistry. This 1-credit hour course is for all incoming chemistry majors at TAMU and is offered only in the Fall semester. In this course, we focus on broad-based chemical topics that reflect the excitement that initially motivates individuals to pursue further study in chemistry. Career opportunities are presented in guest lectures by former students.

I also routinely teach two sections of sophomore organic chemistry (CHEM 227 or 228) each semester. These courses are required for a variety of academic majors including biomedical sciences, biology, chemical engineering, nutrition, as well as others. Sections of CHEM 227/228 are typically around 100 students so, each semester, I have the opportunity to interact with 200 non-major undergraduates. Since these students are a "captive audience" (CHEM 227/228 is a requirement of their major), I continually refine class presentations, which include multi-media demonstrations, to enhance their appreciation for and learning of organic chemistry.

As Associate Undergraduate Advisor I am a member of the departmental Academic Operations Council and the Undergraduate Awards Committee. I work closely with Dr. Gaede to make recommendations regarding departmental administration of undergraduate issues, awards and scholarships. I served from 2000-2004 as the College of Science representative on the Executive Board of the University Advisors and Counselors. I was reappointed to this position in June 2008.

I have served as Faculty Advisor to the Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society since 1999.

For many years, I authored "Test Items" to accompany three organic chemistry textbooks published by Brooks/Cole Publishing.

Other Interests:

I was appointed by the Governor of Texas as a Public Member of the Texas Interagency Council on Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) in 1990. I served as Chairperson of the Council from 1992 until 1996. From 1987 until 1990, I was a member of the Advisory Committee to the ECI Council. My interest in early childhood intervention and my long-term commitment to this agency stems from my daughter, Laura, who has Down Syndrome.

I served on a number of Task Forces for the State of Texas in my capacity as Chairperson of the ECI Council. They include: The Health and Human Services Commission Blue Ribbon Task Force; The Health and Human Services Commission Long-Term Care Task Force; The Governor's Committee to Promote Adoption.

Since December, 1999 I have served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Brazos Valley Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority. I have served as Vice-Chairperson of the Board since 2005.
