Russell's Cybernetic Gallery

You are now entering the strange and exciting world of Russell Dove. Influenced by futuristic films like BladeRunner and science fiction animated features like Aeon Flux, I have developed a unique style of painting. All of my works involve cybernetics, are painted with acrylic paint, and are abstracts. Thus, I call my collection Cybernetic Acrylic Abstracts.

Cybernetics, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary (1983), is the theoretical study of control processes in electronic, mechanical, and biological systems. It was my intent to aesthetically combine these three systems into one.

Any similarity between the abstract cybernetic organisms depicted here and actual cybernetic organisms is purely coincidental and unintentional.

Contentia was my first painting. Contentia is a prime example of my style -- usually characterized by a large red circular eye, a white background, a side, blueprint-like, view, prominent transitions between muscle contours, and a purposely-limited color scheme.

Hornet Picture
Contentia 2000 is the name of this painting.

Hornet Picture
Cybernetic Hornet was painted on 3/24/94. It is the sister painting of the spider.

Cybernetic Spider Picture
Cybernetic Spider was painted on 3/17/94. It is the sister painting of the hornet.

CyberChic Picture
CyberChic is a baby chicken.

Electric Flower Picture
Electronic Flower was painted on 5/30/90.

CyberFish Picture
Cybernetic Angelfish was a break from the sometimes monotonous pure white background I usually use. I painted this one on light blue, treated burlap.

Cyber Frog Picture
Cybernetic Frog was also painted on colored burlap that was also treated for porosity.

Quintessential Beauty Picture
Quintessential Beauty is my view of the perfect woman. I originally got the idea for the eye from the multifaced race of robots called the "Quintessence" on the animated series Transformers. She appears to only have one eye because her hair covers one eye.

Paintings Not Shown Here:

Cyber Horse was painted on 8/10/90. It is not included here because it is an early, less sophisticated design.
My Cyber Cat was painted on 7/20/90. It is the face of my imitation Siamese cat. This is also one of my early paintings.
A Cybernetic Mouse That Can Swim Underwater was painted on 4/27/95. It is the last painting I finished. It represents an amphibious mammal, a cross between a bat or flying mouse and a manta-ray.

In the past, my paintings have been exhibited at Klub X, an alternative night club in McAllen. Currently, I have three paintings on exhibit at Sweet Eugine's, a coffee house here in College Station.
Drawings for many of these paintings have been published in Gallery '92, a student literary magazine.
