General Information
Every international student in the Department of Chemistry must pass the English Language Proficiency Examination (ELPE) to be eligible for a Teaching Assistantship. The ELPE is administered to international students upon their arrival at TAMU. International students on departmental support who do not pass the examination at the time of arrival will be given a second chance at the beginning of the second semester. If the ELPE is not passed during the second semester, the student will be required to enroll in the English Language Institute (ELI) at their own expense for 3 credit hours per semester until all sections of the ELPE are passed.
The Department of Chemistry will support an international student as a Graduate Assistant-Non-Teaching (GANT) for one semester only. This GANT assignment does not fulfill the laboratory teaching requirement for the Graduate Program. International students are expected to pass the ELPE before the beginning of their second year. After this time, students will no longer be considered to be in good standing.
