Overview

The advisory committee or research advisor, in consultation with the student, will develop a degree plan which lists the basic academic requirements for a given degree. The filing of your degree plan establishes your formal advisory committee with the Office of Graduate Studies.

Guidelines if you hold a Bachelors Degree

  • Your degree plan must be filed with the Office of Graduate Studies before registering for your third long semester
  • Ph.D. committees will consist of at least three Chemistry faculty and one outside-the-department faculty
  • You are required to have a total of 96 hours in your degree plan as follows
    • Minimum of four courses (12 credit hours)
    • Four semesters of Chemistry 681: Seminar (4 credit hours)
    • Two semesters of Chemistry 695: Frontiers in Chemical Research (6 credit hours)
    • One semester of Chemistry 686: Ethics in Research and Scholarship (1 credit hour)
    • One semester of Chemistry 697: Methods in Teaching Chemistry Laboratory (1 credit hour)
    • The remainder of the hours is made up of Chemistry 691: Research.
  • Once a degree plan has been approved, the only way any part of it can be changed is by a petition

Guidelines if you hold a Masters Degree from a U.S. University or College

  • Your degree plan must be filed with the Office of Graduate Studies before registering for your third long semester
  • Ph.D. committees will consist of at least three Chemistry faculty and one outside-the-department faculty
  • You are required to have a total of 64 hours in your degree plan as follows
    • Minimum of two courses (6 credit hours)
    • Four semesters of Chemistry 681: Seminar (4 credit hours)
    • Two semesters of Chemistry 695: Frontiers in Chemical Research (6 credit hours)
    • One semester of Chemistry 686: Ethics in Research and Scholarship (1 credit hour)
    • One semester of Chemistry 697: Methods in Teaching Chemistry Laboratory (1 credit hour)
    • The remainder of the hours is made up of Chemistry 691: Research
  • If your M.S. is from Texas A&M University, slightly different rules apply. Please check with the Graduate Program Office
  • Once a degree plan has been approved, the only way any part of it can be changed is by a petition

Guidelines for an Alternative M.S. Degree

  • Generally, all students enter the program seeking a Ph.D.
  • M.S. committees will consist of at least two Chemistry faculty and one outside-the-department faculty
  • You are required to have a total of 32 hours in your degree plan as follows
    • Minimum of five courses (15 credit hours)
    • Two semesters of Chemistry 681: Seminar (2 credit hours)
    • One semester of Chemistry 695: Frontiers in Chemical Research (3 credit hours)
    • One semester of Chemistry 686: Ethics in Research and Scholarship (1 credit hour)
    • One semester of Chemistry 697: Methods in Teaching Chemistry Laboratory (1 credit hour)
    • There is a maximum of 10 credit hours of Chemistry 691: Research that can be applied.
  • Once a degree plan has been approved, the only way any part of it can be changed is by a petition
