Overview
During your second year of study, you are required to present a literature seminar to all interested members of the Department. The skills learned will assist you in making future presentations at ACS meetings, preliminary exam presentations, job interviews, etc.
Goals of Literature Seminars
- Discover new topics and trends.
- Develop your library research skills.
- Develop your own writing style.
- Develop your presentation skills.
- Improve your comfort level while giving presentations.
- Improve your ability to "think on your feet" during question/answer sessions.
Attendance Guidelines
- You must attend the minimum number of seminars throughout the semester.
- In order to get credit, you must sign the attendance log for each seminar you attend.
- Signing into a seminar and then not listening to the speaker is considered academic dishonesty and a violation of the honor code, and will result in disciplinary action.
- The completed yellow question booklet is due on the last day of seminars. See booklet for further requirements.
- You must pass four semesters of Chem 681 to satisfy the departmental seminar requirement for a Ph.D. If you fail a semester you will be required to enroll in additional semesters of 681 until you pass a total of four.
Presentation Guidelines
- You must present a Literature seminar to interested faculty and students as part of your degree program.
- Seminars must be completed by the end of your second year.
- You must be registered for Chemistry 681 to give a literature seminar.
- Seminar topic must be approved by your evaluation committee.
- Seminars are scheduled for Mondays at 4 pm through the Graduate Program Office.
- The Topic Form is due no later than June 15th preceding Fall semester seminars.
- The Topic Form is due no later than November 15th preceding Spring semester seminars.
- You must provide your committee with a copy of your abstract at least 10 days before your seminar date.
- You must provide an electronic copy of your approved abstract and turn in a completed Abstract Form to Sandy Manning (manning@chem.tamu.edu) by 5pm on the Monday of the week prior to your scheduled seminar date.
- Your abstract must be no longer than three pages, excluding references.
- Your abstract must have 12 point font and 1.0 inch margins, including all tables and graphics.
- If you do not pass your seminar presentation, you must reschedule a presentation for the following semester.
- Academic Integrity will be maintained at all times.
